IP Quota

  • Each student has IP (Internet access) quota. Internet traffic from sites outside the university will be charged to this IP quota.

Downloads from mirror.aarnet.edu.au will be charged at 20% of the full price. For example, if you download 10 megabytes from the site, only 2 megabytes will be charged to your quota. More sites will be added to this discounted zone.

However, all traffic from sites within the university is free. For example: www.unsw.edu.au, pop3.student.unsw.edu.au, unimail.unsw.edu.au, mirror.cse.unsw.edu.au, www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~windows, ftp.cse.unsw.edu.au).

  • Each day you can download maximum 20% of your total quota. When you have used your entire daily quota, you can still access sites within the university. However, you must wait until the next day to do further downloads from outside of the university
  • When you have exceeded your session quota you can still access sites within the university; however, to access sites outside of the university you must purchase extra IP quota from the School Office. Please see the IP Quota Purchase page for information about how to do this.
  • It is a good idea to close web browsers when you are not using them. Most web sites embed scripts in their web pages to force your web browser to pull content from the web server to update the display in your web browser. So if you leave a web page open in your web browser for a long time, even if you are not viewing it, this could cost you several megabytes of your IP quota.
